Disruptive Technologies & Trends

The role of disruptive technologies like connected devices ( IoT ) and Predictive Analytics in Building Safety Technology.

There are various internet-based platform available in the world today. This is being used basically for the communication, entertainment and security. This can also be adopted to utilize in the safety & operational aspect of the building as well.

OTT service, a streaming media

An over-the-top application provides a product over the internet bypassing traditional distribution

  • This has almost disrupted the traditional billing models thereby reducing the cabling, interposed computed devices etc., thereby making the distribution simpler in nature

IoT – Internet of things

It’s purely a disruptive technology and it will impact on all aspects of building eco system, including building management system.

It’s an internetworking of physical devices, building and other items embedded with electronics, software, filed instruments like sensors, actuators, etc., so as to exchange the data for pre-defined goa, which has lead to

  • Smart grid
  • Smart industries
  • Autonomous craft
  • Intelligent building – Its rapid response communication, accurate data transfer, operation, maintenance etc., can be easily achievable

Big data analytics & management

  • Most of you will agree that the electrical system is very complexity in nature. The behaviour of any load depends on many parameters which are again variant. It may be the voltage or a frequency or load unbalancing etc.,
  • Because of this, the faults which are occurring are unpredicted
  • The cause for the fault which is found at one time may not the same at a different time

Big data analytics and management is the process of examining large data sets containing a variety of data types – i.e., Big Data – to uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations, trends, unique/autonomous behaviours at each node point and other useful information.”

  • This would eliminate the possibility of unforeseen faults to occur in first place
  • This would help the maintenance team to visualize and plan their action plan against anticipated or even the hypothetical faults in advance

Augmented reality

  • It is an interactive experience of the real object augmented by computer generated perceptual information
  • By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one
  • This would help the maintenance team to have a continues monitoring of various equipment, its field instruments and the status of its healthiness
  • Assume, you got an electrical room or substation on your hand phone or an iPad to visualize its function continuously.

Artificial intelligence

As most of us area aware, this is the display of computer programmed intelligence in the machine. The data analytics would help in making most intelligence operator in the world!

This technology is currently adopted vastly in health care industry, defence and started getting in to automotive industry as well.

It is purely a my guess that the same intelligence would be commonly utilized in the routine but life risk maintenance in future for sure

After saying all this, where do we store these extensive data and processing resources to achieve our goal?

Today, Cloud computing is the one which is giving a solution towards the data storage. This is an internet based computing meant for providing shared processing resources and data to all the defined end users based on their demand.

This is the only option available now to achieve economies of scale, like grid electricity over a network what we have today, in the country in most of the region

  • As can be felt, the traffic jams in Bangalore (as a matter of fact, it is seen in most of the metro cities in the world today) is huge
  • Now, it is extended to the Air traffic as well now

The day will come for sure, when network spectrum will get crowded, and the latency may create a problem to the whole world so what we do thereafter?

The world is already looking for an alternate way to mitigate this problem and it is called

Edge computing

  • This would replicates information closer to the customer base and traffic between the source and the edge is primarily updates
  • Network latency would be reduced drastically
  • The edge computing pushes the application and data away from the centralized point to the logical extremes of a network
  • Edge services decreases the data volume that must be moved & reduces the transfer cost quality improvement etc.,
